RMI’s performance at The National Space Centre 2006 was something very special, as those who were there or bought a virtual ticket will no doubt tell you. Not only was the music they played quite incredible, but they had a guest member in Ian Boddy! Something was obviously going on. What most people didn’t know was that Ian had been working with RMI for some time on what was to be their new studio album (the CD I am reviewing here). He was working with them in the capacity of producer however, not musician. In my opinion Ian is the best producer and technician in New Age EM today so his involvement with one of the most exciting bands in the scene had to be a good thing but just how good we weren’t to know until now. I think this album will go down as a classic. It is one of the most exciting albums I have heard and my favourite since the Arc album ‘Arcturus’.

We kick off with ‘The First Cry….’ Deep intense spooky sounds, covering all ends of the spectrum, will make the ground rumble and windows shake. A low throb starts up and a fantastic rhythm really hits home over tron sounds that seem to give that instrument a fresh and exciting new lease of life. Then the sequences come in and as you would expect these are also fantastic, the mix between all the various sounds being heavenly. We are only three minutes in and already this must surely be some of the best music I have ever heard from RMI. But of course- the best is still to come. The lead lines are truly awesome. More sequences, all exquisite, come and go as we move from one organically ever-changing highlight to the next. It is hard to find the words to express just how good this track is. It has everything from deep growling menacing power to ecstatic excitement. Surely the ‘Seven Sceptres for Sephulcrave’ can’t keep up this standard? Instead of trying to outdo it though they just go for something completely different. A sort of heavily processed piano melody stands in isolation echoing into the distance- then clang, twang, creek, the mood is changed completely. But these are no normal sounds- you sort of recognise where they are coming from but they have so much power and depth to them. Words like ‘clang’ seem so inadequate. Things do then get seriously weird for a couple of minutes before calm descends with more Tron (but not as we have previously know it) sounds joining the sonic collage. From foreboding we move to melancholy. The piano (of sorts) makes a return for the finish. ‘Trident’, is yet another different offering. Initially it’s just as moody, electronics fizzing to life. A sequence strikes up and again it is of the very highest order mixing with more mellotron as the barrage of sequences becomes more intense- then wallop, rhythms really start to kick. These are not like any rhythms you will have heard on a RMI album before however as they have a rather cool contemporary feel and really get into a groove but then descend as quickly as they came to allow for a completely different but just as stunning sequence to come and do its thing. Incredibly moody sounds bring us to a finish. ‘Searching Septentrional Skies’ starts very quietly, swirling and tinkling sounds giving quite a psychedelic spaced out feel. An extremely low rumbling sequence menacingly makes its entrance. Another faster one joins it, as do yet more stunningly produced percussives. The way this one is building it will even eclipse the opener! The sequences regroup and come back even stronger than before, again morphing organically in a most wonderful way. This is so moody! ‘…….the Last Laugh’ starts atmospherically but as to be expected on an album of this quality the sounds chosen are simply exquisite. It is as if pure energy is arcing over a vast distance, vaporizing anything that should stray into its path. Tron softens things but again it seems even more lush and ethereal than usual. Gentle guitar licks add to the serenity still further. We slowly descend to silence but it is one of those albums with a false finish as we get a couple of minutes pause before fizzing electronics return along with manic laughing and distorted speech, giving things a rather sinister feel. We fade very slowly to a long very quiet, just at the edge of hearing, drone. If ever there was an album that kept all that is good about Berlin School music but brought it forward to today then this is it. Nothing has been taken away but instead it has been refined and given that added extra exciting bite. Maybe a new genre has been started, I don’t know but it has certainly thrown the gauntlet down to see what others can do. A landmark New Age album for the new millennium.
